The main reason why I created this blog was to explore what keeps us from feeling inspired. What keeps us from having a positive mindset or spirit? What if I told you no matter what is going on around you (even during this pandemic), it’s your every day or even every minute decision you make as to what you allow into your mind or spirit and that includes what you watch on TV.
MY GUILTY PLEASURE
My favorite hobby in the whole wide world is watching TV. I call it my guilty pleasure because the number of hours I watch TV weekly might make you cringe, and this pandemic has not helped. This rectangle box invention was a constant companion for me growing up. I remember every Sunday I would get the paper TV guide (yes, I am an older millennial). I would pull out my trusty highlighter and circle every show or movie I planned to watch that week.
Watching TV invokes every emotion inside of me. My eyes and ears are thoroughly entertained. As I get older, I realize I need to set boundaries because TV shows and movies can have a way of influencing my perspective, morals, and decisions.
Before I give you my list of feel-good shows, I must be honest. I have a list of what I like to call my “ratchet” TV shows. My DVR records plenty of Real Housewives shows on Bravo & let me not start on 90 Day Fiancé. However, I still make sure to prioritize shows that make my heart smile or even bring happy tears to my eyes.
MY WATCH LIST

The Good Doctor (Hulu) – I just started watching this show. WOW!!!! The main character, Dr. Shaun Murphy, is a surgical resident with a photographic memory and is just a pure genius. Sounds like the perfect doctor right? Well Dr. Murphy has autism which affects his ability to communicate and cause sensory overload. Dr. Murphy has a way of convincing his doubters (colleagues) that he does belong in their surgical world. Also he has no filter which can be hilarious or make you press pause on your remote to reflect on what he just said.

I Can See Your Voice (FOX) – I was a skeptic of watching this game show because I thought it was a copycat of The Masked Singer. I was wrong! I recently started watching season one. WOW! I enjoy the back and forth deciding if a contestant can sing or not. Most of all I love the contestants are everyday people.

CBS Sunday Morning (CBS) – I have been watching this show since I was in elementary school. Each episode explores a variety of topics and introduces everyday people doing remarkable things. “Pay It Forward” type of stories has been a staple of this show before the term existed.

The Good Place (NBC) – Unfortunately this show was recently canceled however check to see if it is on Peacock. The Good Place is a fun spin on the afterlife.

Masked Singer (FOX) – Another show I was a skeptic of. I did not watch this show until season two. This show is perfect for the entire family of all ages. I love listening to the stories of the celebrities and how the show has given them a place to be themselves without judgment.

Gilmore Girls (Syndicated/Netflix) – I remember hearing about this show years ago. Before the pandemic, I watched the entire series. I have to say every single episode left me with a warm and tingling feel-good feeling.

The Bradshaw Bunch (E! & Peacock) – You know how sometimes you want to binge watch something. That’s exactly how I came across this show. There is only one other love in Terry Bradshaw’s life that is bigger than football and that is his family especially his granddaughter Zurie. If you think Terry Bradshaw’s personality is bigger than life on his football show, GET READY to see how he is at home.

Jane The Virgin (Syndicated/Netflix) – I avoided this show like a plague for years because of its title. I assumed like most shows, the topic of virginity would be mocked or stereotyped. Not this show at all! It took me a few shows to get used to the narrator but after that I was hooked.
HUMANITY INSPIRES MOVEMENT
For each blog post, I like to take a moment to share how this blog post could continue our mission to inspire humanity.
“Art imitates life” is a common saying I think about when I watch a futuristic television series. I even think about this saying when I watch a good conspiracy movie. Why do I think about this saying? Writers must have some truth or real life elements in their story lines. Hollywood is known for hiring experts to work with their writers. The television show Scandal hired real life crisis fixer Judy Smith to provide her expertise on their storylines. That was a genius move considering the show was loosely based on her career. Medical drama television shows always have doctors on the set while filming is taking place to make sure the actors are acting out medical procedures correctly.
Having experts on payroll in Hollywood guarantees “art imitates life” however there is another purpose experts fulfill that is sometimes hidden. They can change our perspective in how we view life. For example, the movie The Notebook (based on a true story). The Notebook is a romantic drama that shows us the love story of a couple. I remember watching this movie with friends in college. At the end of the movie, one of my friends empathetically said he would not get married unless he loves a woman the way the main character in the movie loved his wife. WOW!! Can you believe how convincing that love story in the movie must have been to change a person’s perspective on love? I remember after years ago after watching the movie Final Destination 2, I was paranoid when I drove past tractor trailer trucks carrying any type of materials such as logs or long pipes.
We have to be intentional in the type of movies and television shows we watch. They can influence our perspective so easily and can definitely impact our emotions. So far in 2022 we have seen at least two surges of covid-19 positive cases, dramatic increase in gun violence, inflation hitting our pockets, monkeypox, etc. It’s even more important now to make sure our entertainment does not send us down a rabbit hole or make us paranoid.
CONCLUSION
My last confession. There are four feel-good shows I have never watched a single episode. So, clutch your pearls or prepare to have a mouth-dropping moment. I have never watched …. Friends, This Is Us, The Big Bang Theory, or Black-ish.
Shocker, right?
Let me know what you think of my Watch List. What feel-good TV shows do you recommend? Please no profanity, politically driven statements, or just plain meanness. ANY SUCH COMMENTS WILL BE REMOVED.
First of all, love the post. I watch a lot too! Watched about three from your list and I definitely want to try Gilmore girls. I bet you’ll like Blackish and This is us.
